If you know me, you know that I'm a little bit of a film and video music nerd. That's why I've spent hours building this playlist: an eclectic mix of tracks from some of the best-known and most influential Bollywood films. This list features songs from across genres — traditional Indian background music is mixed with western melodies; songs with lyrics are juxtaposed against instrumentals; and the playlist explores the different moods and emotions found in these films. I hope it brings back some memories for those whose parents took them to see these movies as kids, or discover something new for those who love discovering new worlds through soundtracks. Now here's the best of Bollywood, as curated by your pal, Roko... #15: Yeh Sambhal Ja (1975) by Laxmikant – If you've already heard this song on the radio or on TV, chances are that you know it — and you probably didn't realize that it was an Indian film and not an American one. (Laxmikant's songs aren't all over YouTube, though — the quality of his work has been deteriorating over the past few years. If you're only going to listen to one song on this list, make sure it's this one.) Bhoole Bisre Geet (1973) by R.D. Burman – This is the title song from a folk opera film — and some people actually don't like it and think that it interferes with their appreciation for the movie. I say bull-pucky! It's awesome! Badi Bahen (1995) by Anu Malik – Anu Malik has written and produced more than his fair share of grade-A filmi music, but he has also written some of the best (and most unpredictable) Western pop tracks that you will ever hear. Who knew that a world-music fusion like this could be the most popular Bollywood song of all time? (I think most Western pop fans can relate to this song — they might not understand it, but they know the feeling.) Chain Panchi (1991) by Jatin-Lalit – Now this is a song you can really dance to! Not only does it feature one of Bollywood's most famous (and most beautiful) actresses, its music is also nice and exotic. Aaj Jaane Jaan (1994) by Mohammed Rafi – Mohammed Rafi is one of the best known faces in the history of Indian film music. Rafi was not just a singer — he also sang playback for hundreds of actors over the course of his career. This is one of my favorite duets between Rafi and Shammi Kapoor, shot in the world-famous Macau casino. This duet features two of India's most prominent actors — and listening to them sing together makes me wonder why we don't get more vocal performances of this kind in American film and TV. Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) by Anu Malik – This is another Anu Malik masterpiece — the movie was an Indian version of Romeo & Juliet , but the song tells a different love story all together. cfa1e77820
